There is known problem with Internet Explorer 8 messing up printing from Outlook Express, Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail.  What happens is that the right margin on the page is increased to about 4-5cm, which cuts of the right hand edge of the text.

More information can be found at the Microsoft Knowledge Base article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/980333 where there is also a hotfix for Windows Vista and Windows 7.

However, there is no hotfix available for Windows XP.  After some experimenting I have worked out that the DLL files in the hotfix for Vista will work with Windows XP and cure the problem, however applying them to Windows XP is not straightforward.  You need to have access to a Windows Vista or Windows 7 PC to extract the files.  NB - changing these files might have other side effects so be warned.

Here's how to do it.

Go to the knowledge base article above and click on the link at the top of the article to apply for the hotfix - I used Fix312913. (This assumes you have a 32bit version of Windows XP.)  You need to supply an e-mail address and you will be e-mailed a link to download the fix.

Once you have the fix, you need to transfer it to a Windows 7 or Vista PC and then use the Expand command twice to get to the files:

Double click on the file you have downloaded - called 406680_intl_i386_zip.exe.
Extract to something like d:\hotfix
Start a command prompt (type CMD in Search and press Enter.)

Enter the following commands, hitting return after each line.

d:
cd hotfix
md extracted
expand -F:* IE8-Windows6.0-KB980333-x86.msu d:\hotfix\extracted
cd extracted
md dll
expand -F:*.dll IE8-Windows6.0-KB980333-x86.cab d:\hotfix\extracted\dll -I

You should now have 2 DLL files : ieframe.dll and ieui.dll in the folder d:\hotfix\extracted\dll.  Copy these DLL files to the Windows XP PC.

On the Windows XP Machine, using Windows Explorer or My Computer, browse to c:\windows\system32 and rename ieframe.dll to ieframe.dll.old and ieui.dll to ieui.dll.old.  If you cannot do this because a file is in use then reboot and try again.

Copy the new versions of ieframe.dll and ieui.dll in to c:\windows\system32 and reboot the computer.

Windows should now start using these new versions  - try to print from Outlook Express.

Carbonite worked for 3 days, backed up files OK then stopped at 28% of initial backup.

This issue has now been escalated to 2nd line and I am awaiting a response.

In the meantime, if you have a problem with Carbonite installing then it is worth looking at the logs it creates which can be found at the following location (in Windows XP)

c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Carbonite\Carbonite Backup

NB: you need to show hidden files, because the Application Data folder is hidden.
